Kids + AI: How to Set Healthy Guidelines (Without Fear or Shame)

AI is officially part of everyday life—at school, at home, and on the devices kids already use. Whether your child is using ChatGPT to brainstorm a story, asking Siri questions, or using AI-powered apps for homework help, AI isn’t “coming” — it’s already here.


So the goal isn’t to ban it out of fear.


The goal is to teach kids how to use it safely, ethically, and thoughtfully—while parents stay involved in a way that supports trust and critical thinking.

A lot of parents fear being “too controlling.” But there’s a difference between spying and supervising.

Step 9: Create an “AI Check-In Routine”


Instead of only talking about AI when something goes wrong, build a quick weekly check-in.


Ask:

  • “What did you use AI for this week?”

  • “Did anything confuse you?”

  • “Did anything feel off or inappropriate?”

  • “Did you fact-check anything?”

  • “What’s one cool thing you learned?”


This keeps AI use in the open and builds trust long-term.

The goal isn’t to raise kids who never click the wrong thing.


It’s to raise kids who:
